Merpay is a mobile payment service within the Mercari app. With Merpay, users can use their sales proceeds on Mercari or money loaded via their bank account to shop at countless places.

“Create value in a global marketplace where anyone can buy & sell.” This mission comes from our desire to create a more prosperous society that reuses its resources and in which individuals can realize their dreams, by allowing anyone to enjoy the ease of buying and selling items on our marketplace. Through Mercari, for example, the old clothes still hanging in your closet or the unneeded belongings that you would normally throw out can instead be given to someone who needs them. It means that items which no longer hold any value for one person can be transformed into new value for someone else. We believe that by expanding this marketplace across borders, cultures, and languages to reach a global audience, we can create a circular economy where people take better care of the items they use.

Mercari has sought to expand overseas from the outset. This led us to enter the US market in 2014, the year after Mercari’s founding. The US is home to people of diverse backgrounds, of many different races, nationalities, and religions. Laws and culture also differ from state to state. Growing our US service requires grappling with complex problems and issues. This is exactly why we think of the US as a microcosm for our future global expansion. It’s an extremely important country for us, where we cannot afford to fail. While this makes it much more difficult than our Japan-side operations, our US business contributes greatly to achieving Mercari’s mission, and we will continue to face the challenges of the US market going forward.

“Building trust for a seamless society.” This has been Merpay’s mission since the company’s founding. It says that Merpay will create a “seamless society,” where each individual’s “trust”—built through use of the Mercari marketplace app and the Merpay mobile payment service—is visualized and becomes the basis for allowing users greater freedom in how they use their money. We believe this will not only allow everyone an unprecedented level of freedom and equality in how they use their money, enabling them to obtain the things they want, it will also create a society where people can realize their dreams. Merpay’s goal isn’t to create a more simple and convenient form of money. Rather, we believe our goal and our mission is to transform society, people’s relationship with money, the way people work, and how people achieve their dreams.

On the business front, we aim to provide new value to our fans and local communities through our partnerships with those communities and our business partner Mercari, Inc. The most important thing to us as a soccer club is having our team continue to earn titles. Each of us has a different station and role, but our work shares the same goal. Company Information

A secure system for buying and selling

Mercari provides its users with an environment where they can trade safely and securely. Mercari also uses an escrow payment system in order to guarantee a safe and reliable transaction service for everyone. In addition, buyers and sellers rate each other, so users can have peace of mind by checking the other party’s past reviews before deciding to engage in a transaction. Furthermore, we have a dedicated customer service system that responds to customer inquiries and monitors the service.

Cooperating with Authorities

Mercari strives to provide a safe and secure service for all users by cooperating with public institutions and law enforcement. The aim is to work towards making not just Mercari, but the industry as a whole safer and more secure by participating in organizations such as the Council for Intellectual Property Protection (CIPP), EC Business Association and the National Shoplifting Prevention Organization (NSPO). The company also takes a proactive role in exchanging opinions and drawing up guidelines.

Dedicated customer service team

Mercari’s customer service system operates all day, every day, ensuring users can enjoy a safe and secure experience. Mercari monitors listings/transactions both manually and with automated detection systems to identify items that violate terms of use, making every effort to promptly remove any counterfeit/stolen goods.
These systems are based on copius data from item information and transactions as well as AI technology. We strive to improve their accuracy and expand their scope in an effort to create a secure environment for users.

Mercari’s Product Safety Support Program

Mercari’s Product Safety Support Program aims to deliver product safety information issued by manufacturers/importers directly to Mercari users who own the products in question (users who have listed or bought the item on Mercari). We believe that identifying those who own affected products and ensuring they receive the safety information they need will increase the percentage of items successfully returned to the manufacturer, help prevent accidents, and contribute to manufacturer/importer product safety initiatives.

Mercari Intellectual Property (IP) Protection Program

The IP Protection Program is a support program unique to Mercari. Mercari responds to requests to delete listings that infringe IP rights as stipulated by the Provider Liability Limitation Act, but this program simplifies and speeds up this process for rights holders. As a member of the program, not only will you be able to cut down on the time spent submitting documents every time you file a complaint, but the time to complete your takedown request will also be shorter.

Inhibiting fraud by enhancing identity verification

Since February 2019, listers have been required to provide their personal information (address/full name/date of birth) when registering. A user’s sales balance cannot be withdrawn if the name registered does not match the name of the account for the balance transfer; this prevents fraudulent listings, such as stolen goods.
Ample compensation

If a product arrives damaged or defective, we offer returns and compensation. Eligible items include unintentionally purchased counterfeit goods, items with a defect or damage not included in the description, and shipping fees for when an accident occurred with Mercari Shipping. Mercari has strategies to ensure normal items are safely delivered to the buyer, but in the event that a user purchases counterfeit or defective goods, they are also eligible for a return or compensation.
Awareness activities for adolescents and educators

We hold educational activities across the country for middle school and high school students, as well as parents and teaching staff, where we teach them how to avoid trouble on marketplace apps, to ensure they can use Mercari with a sense of security.

Message From Our CEO

As Mercari Group celebrated its 10th anniversary in February last year, the company announced our new Group mission, "Circulate all forms of value to unleash the potential in all people." Our business activities are the expression of our mission, and by facilitating the circulation of all forms of value, not just physical things and money, we aim to create opportunities for anyone to realize their dreams and contribute to society and the people around them.

To give a few examples of our efforts to expand the circulation of different forms of value, last year we launched Mercari Hallo, which provides a platform for our users to take on a variety of challenges through a new workstyle. Mercoin has made it easy for anyone to get their hands on a new form of value in cryptoassets, and we’ve started to provide our users with the experience of shopping using this latest form of value.

In tune with a sentiment that remains unchanged since the day we established our company, we want to play a leading role in creating a circular economy through the growth of our business. In our calculations last year, we found that a total of approximately 610,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions are avoided annually through transactions in select categories on Mercari. This fiscal year, we disclosed information and set goals related to CO2 emissions involving Mercari deliveries and further strengthened our commitment to reducing the burden on the environment.

Unleashing the potential in all people is not something we’ve set out to realize just for our users. We feel that it is also an important part of Mercari’s corporate culture conducive toward continuing sustainable growth. We are continuing to strengthen our foundation for creating innovation by establishing an environment where talent with diverse perspectives and skills can work with ease.

In this edition of the Impact Report, we convey information about the positive impact that Mercari had on society last year and the efforts we made to accomplish this.
