Mercari, Inc. announces that it has responded to the climate change questionnaire provided by CDP, a global non-profit that runs the world’s only independent environmental disclosure system, for the first time and obtained a score of B.
About CDP
CDP is a non-profit organization established in 2000 that runs a global environmental disclosure system and encourages companies and local governments to disclose information about their environmental impacts. In 2024, approximately 24,800 companies across the world responded to CDP’s questionnaire. CDP scores respondents on an 8-point scale, with scores ranging from A (the highest score) to D-. For the 2024 cycle, Mercari received a score of B, which is the third highest score and corresponds to “management level” by CDP’s scoring standards. This score indicates CDP’s recognition of Mercari as understanding the company’s environmental risks and impact and taking action to address them.
Mercari Group’s sustainability strategy
Mercari strives to be a planet-positive company that contributes to solving environmental and societal issues through its business activities in order to realize a circular economy in which all forms of value circulate seamlessly.
In 2024, a report calculating the positive impact of Mercari’s business on carbon emissions revealed that an annual total of 610,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions were avoided across Japan and the US through Mercari Group’s combined business activities in both countries. In Japan alone, users avoided approximately 52,000 tons of apparel waste (by weight) by listing items they no longer needed on Mercari. This is equivalent to approximately 10% of the total 480,000 tons of apparel thrown away annually in Japan.
Going forward, Mercari will strive to do its part in creating a circular economy by continuing to take action to promote reuse and provide alternatives to throwing items away.
