After leaving Zynga, this founder ditched the gaming business for online shopping

With millions of dollars in the bank, most people would already be satisfied with life. But serial entrepreneur Shintaro Yamada wanted more than just financial freedom. He wanted to build a company that is truly global. His first shot at global fame was Unoh, a gaming studio founded in 2001 which was sold to Zynga in 2010.

After working at Zynga for 18 months, Yamada took a year-long break and traveled around the world. “While traveling, I thought about what to do next. Mobile commerce comes to mind because there is a chance to go global,” says Yamada. Returning from his travel, Yamada founded Mercari, a mobile marketplace that allows users to sell their second-hand items.
